Virtual Reality at CIVITAS Forum 2017

by Marianne Weinreich, Weinreich Mobility, AltaGO-Europe Partner

CIVITAS is a network of cities for cities dedicated to cleaner, better transport in Europe and beyond. Since it was launched by the European Commission in 2002, the CIVITAS Initiative has tested and implemented over 800 measures and urban transport solutions as part of demonstration projects in more than 80 Living Lab cities Europe-wide.  The CIVITAS Initiative works on 10 thematic areas, related to sustainable transport mobility, covering: Car-independent Lifestyles, Clean Fuels; Vehicles, Collective Passenger Transport, Demand Management Strategies, Integrated Planning, Mobility Management, Public Involvement, Safety; Security, Transport Telematics, Urban Freight Logistics.

From 27-29 September, close to 500 participants convened in Torres Vedras, Portugal, for the 15th CIVITAS Forum. A diverse community of policy makers, practitioners, academics, and city representatives debated the most pressing issues surrounding sustainable urban mobility through presentations and workshops that covered a broad selection of themes, ranging from core sustainable mobility topics like collective passenger transport and demand management strategies to newer perspectives, such as MaaS (mobility as a service), shared mobility, electric buses and freight vehicles, and connected and automated vehicles.

Niels Hoé and I were present to promote cycling and the Cycling Embassy of Denmark of which we are both members and board members. We brought our new publication and took the delegates on a virtual reality bike ride of Copenhagen.

The virtual reality bike ride has turned out the be even more effective to engage people and talk about cycling at conferences than we imagined. People totally forget that they are on a stationary bike and have a blast cycling through the streets of Copenhagen.

The VR movie is available for everybody to use at: http://www.cycling-embassy.dk/2017/06/16/bike-copenhagen-cycling-embassy-denmark

You just need a smartphone, VR glasses and a bicycle on rollers. Then you are ready to roll!
