The project addressed public health and safety, environmental sustainability, and economic stability through hiring 12 caregivers to serve as route leaders on the walk to Durfee Elementary School over the course of the 2017-2018 school year.

Alta Planning + Design worked with the City of El Monte, Amigos de los Rios, and the City of El Monte School District (EMCSD) to implement a Walking School Bus. The pilot project at Durfee School tested materials, gathered data, and learned key lessons, which can help establish similar programs at other schools in the district and beyond. That same data showed that in one year, students walked 22,989.42 miles on six different routes with an average of 68 walkers participating every day. An estimated 912 gallons of gas and 8.1 metric tons of CO2 emissions were saved.
