St. Paul’s Grand Round is part of the region’s world-renowned parkway network. Stretching across the width of the city, this 12-mile project addressed the redesign of approximately half of the city’s connected system. With the goals of connecting people to parks, nature, neighborhoods and businesses, this project focused on updating the Grand Round to meet the needs of the 21st Century, including sustainability, quality of life and economic development.
As part of a multi-disciplinary team, Alta developed design guidelines and pathway typologies that would allow the design team to develop a safe and seamless experience for pedestrians, bicyclists, transit users and motorists using the corridor. Alta prepared plans for the corridor showing traffic re-channelization, intersection reconfigurations, and placement for public art and wayfinding elements. This high-profile project involved a robust public engagement process and an ambitious schedule to begin implementation 16 months after beginning the initial planning. Construction commenced for several segments during the summer of 2016.
