The town’s central core is home to natural hot springs, a bustling shopping and restaurant scene, a scenic riverwalk, and overt community identity. By working with Alta on a multimodal plan, the town aims to bring many of these assets to the east end, creating a well-connected and continuous experience. In addition to enhancing connectivity for people walking and biking, the project also assessed river and recreational access opportunities, including a more permanent site for launching kayaks and rafting tubes.
One of the unique aspects of this project is that the main corridor intersecting the planning area is State Highway 160. Alta developed innovative and forward-thinking concepts designed to gain CDOT approval within the complicated right-of-way. Considerations accounted for the seasonal variability of traffic as well as the higher volume of trucking traffic that utilizes this important east-west corridor across southern Colorado.
