Empowering Active Transportation: The City's Collaborative Strategy for Safer Walking and Cycling in Northern Rural Areas

The City of Burlington, ON, has taken a significant step towards fostering a more vibrant and accessible community by partnering with Alta to develop a comprehensive strategy aimed at enhancing walking and cycling facilities in the northern rural areas. Recognizing the unique challenges posed by rural infrastructure, this initiative is designed to create safe and inviting pathways for residents and visitors alike.

Central to the project was a workshop conducted by Alta, which engaged local residents to identify key issues faced by those living in the area. This community-centric approach ensured that the strategy reflects the needs and aspirations of the people who call this region home. With rural roads often characterized by high speed limits, the strategy emphasizes a context-sensitive analysis to understand how these routes fit within the larger rural road network.

Utilizing advanced engagement techniques and GIS analytics, the strategy pinpointed current and potential travel patterns for active transportation. This data-driven approach led to tailored recommendations for facility types that cater to a diverse range of ages and abilities, ensuring that walking and cycling become viable options for everyone in the community.

As part of the plan, Alta also conducted safety reviews of five critical road crossings along the Bruce Trail. The recommendations generated from these assessments aim to enhance safety and comfort, making these crossings more user-friendly for pedestrians and cyclists.

By improving connectivity to local destinations and facilitating travel from urban centers and adjacent municipalities, this strategy not only promotes active transportation but also opens avenues for economic development and public health. Ultimately, the project aspires to create a more connected, healthier, and economically vibrant community, where residents can enjoy the beauty of their rural surroundings safely and comfortably.
