East Oakland, CA secures $17.2 million in funding utilizes Alta led grant application
Alta supported the City of Oakland (OakDOT) by developing over 6 miles of concept designs for four neighborhood bike routes (bike boulevards) in East Oakland. East Oakland residents identified these neighborhood bike routes as priority corridors while updating Oakland’s Bicycle Plan, Let’s Bike Oakland, which Alta led as the prime consultant. Developing local connections that connect people to schools, parks, libraries, and transit will be accomplished through traffic calming, wayfinding, and street pavement resurfacing.
The design team created a base map in AutoCAD with curb lines, driveways, and stormwater inlets identified on top of aerial imagery. Alta developed initial concepts and shared those with the client for feedback before refining the entire corridor. The neighborhood bike routes will include horizontal and vertical deflection to achieve traffic calming. Alta also identified wayfinding sign locations and pavement markings to enhance the user experience. Alta gained quality control through a comment log where the client provided one set of unified comments. Alta was able to review as a team, respond with questions in one follow-up meeting, and make revisions in less than five business days.
In addition to the concept design, Alta authored a successful $17.2 million Active Transportation Program grant application to fund detailed engineering and construction.
