Alta set up the Mini Main Street using slip covers that go over the back of folding chairs, taped out crosswalks for students to practice crossing, and had a car and driver on-scene to allow the students to practice making eye contact when moving about roadways.
This program also educated students on the meaning of traffic signs and pointed out other safety hazards like backing up vehicles.
This low materials cost project provides immense opportunities for students to gain confidence and valuable roadway safety skills when walking and biking, and is part of Alta’s larger SRTS program with the City of Mountain View.
