Alta assisted the Waterloo Region to evaluate options for long-term, financially sustainable bike and electric scooter share. The region had previously benefited from the Community Access Bikeshare system that was operational from 2011 to 2018. This project uses lessons learned from this system as well as lessons learned from existing bike and scooter share pilots operating in the area.
Bike share will expand the region’s access to transit and popular destinations such as the University of Waterloo campus. To set program parameters, including type of technology, operational structure, geographic area, and service standards, Alta used a demand analyses based on a GIS model that evaluates where people live, work, learn, play, and take transit. The team developed clear recommendations for managing and evaluating the impacts of bike share and other forms of micromobility on public space throughout the region, including larger urban areas and smaller towns.
