Alta developed a comprehensive natural surface trails plan that honors Olmsted’s original design philosophy while responding to the realities of modern use. Guided by ongoing woodland management efforts, the plan carefully balances the needs of mountain bikers, equestrians, hikers, and other park users, improving access and experience while protecting ecological health and historic character.
The plan evaluates existing trail conditions, highlights and preserves historic routes, and identifies opportunities for new, sustainably designed trails that expand equitable access across the parks. Working alongside a Professional Trail Builders Association (PTBA) partner, Alta also developed a strategy to decommission unsanctioned “social” trails and restore impacted areas.
With clear cost estimates, a phased implementation strategy, and detailed operations and maintenance guidance, the plan provides a practical roadmap for investment. The result is a forward-looking vision that strengthens Louisville’s Olmsted Parks and enhances how residents and visitors connect with nature.
