Alta & NACTO Webinar: Designing for Small Things With Wheels
Nov 29, 2023 | 11:00am PST
According to the National Association of City Transportation Officials (NACTO), people in the U.S. have taken half a billion trips on shared bike and e-scooter systems since 2010, and e-bike sales in the U.S. grew three-fold between 2019 and 2021. To meet demand, we’ve seen a sharp increase in micromobility options on our roads, including e-bikes, cargo bikes, e-scooters, sit-down scooters, powered skateboards and other “small things with wheels”. They require varying levels of skill, incorporate a wide range of speeds and turning radii, and are many different sizes, shapes, and colors.
NACTO’s latest working paper, Designing for Small Things With Wheels, explores the strategies planners and engineers are employing to increase safety and comfort for people riding this evolving variety of small things with wheels in urban bikeways. In this training webinar, Alta’s Derek Abe and Joe Gilpin will discuss key design considerations practitioners examine, including new approaches to passing widths, queueing lengths, turn radii, grade changes, and surface materials.
