Burlington is transforming into a vibrant, connected urban city with the help of Alta's updated Cycling Master Plan, designed to create a safe and inclusive network for cyclists of all ages and abilities.
The City of Burlington is evolving from a commuter suburb west of Toronto into a vibrant, complete urban city. As part of this transformation, Burlington has partnered with Alta to update its Cycling Master Plan, aiming to create a well-connected network of cycling facilities throughout the city.
This initiative focuses on inclusivity—ensuring people of all ages and abilities feel safe and comfortable cycling as part of their everyday travel. With a thoughtful approach, Alta conducted several key studies, including Live, Work, Play Demand, Gap, and Level of Traffic Stress analyses. These studies help pinpoint where residents need and want to go, identify gaps and barriers in the current infrastructure, and shape a network that is accessible for all skill levels.
To ensure smooth implementation, Alta prioritized projects that align with the plan’s goals and identified a “minimum grid” for near-term rollout. This strategic framework offers a foundation for quick wins while building toward a robust, long-term cycling network.
This project ties to the Rural Active Transportation Strategy, reinforcing Burlington’s commitment to active transportation options that support a sustainable, healthy future. By enhancing cycling infrastructure, Burlington is fostering a more connected, livable city where residents can move easily, safely, and sustainably.
