"Toward an Active California" is California’s first statewide plan that lays out the policies and actions that Caltrans and its partner agencies will take to achieve the department’s ambitious statewide goals to double walking and triple bicycling trips by 2020.
This plan is an important element of a statewide goal to provide robust multimodal transportation options to everyone in California. Alta Planning + Design led the development of plan goals, objectives, performance measures, and strategies, as well as identifying the existing and needed data to support performance measures and ongoing bicycle and pedestrian counts. The project team designed a public survey to gauge community interests, as well as a “‘big idea” board to premiere the planning process at the 2015 Cal Bike Summit. Alta collaborated with a three-dozen member Technical Advisory Committee and facilitated planning engagement workshops across the state to talk to local agencies about how they work with Caltrans on bicycle and pedestrian projects.
Toward an Active California includes four objectives and fifteen strategies that emerged from community input during the extensive outreach process. Each strategy includes multiple actions for implementing this Plan. By 2040, people in California of all ages, abilities, and incomes can safely, conveniently, and comfortably walk and bicycle for their transportation needs.
