Alta led a process to plan, design, and implement nine active transportation demonstration projects across North Dakota, which was an outgrowth of Alta’s work on ND Moves, the first statewide Active and Public Transportation Plan in North Dakota.
The project was an opportunity to test new designs proposed within ND Moves. Alta worked closely with NDDOT to recruit cities across the state to participate in the project. Nine cities were selected, ranging from small cities such as Bottineau to the larger cities of Bismarck and Grand Forks. Alta led planning and design workshops in each city. Then the Alta team developed designs for each of the demonstration projects and coordinated closely with local partners to select materials and gather volunteer support.
Alta staff were on site to lead each of the nine demonstration project installations. Each project was evaluated to understand changes in street use and speeds. The projects were an opportunity to widen community engagement by allowing residents to experience new infrastructure first-hand. Alta supported each community in gathering input on the projects to inform potential long-term changes. The project won a regional award in the “Quality of Life/Community Development, Small Project” category in the 2019 America’s Transportation Awards competition.
