The New Mexico Energy, Mineral, and Natural Resources Department has commissioned a master plan for the Rio Grande Trail — an ambitious 500-mile recreation corridor that will stretch from Mexico to Colorado.

Alta led a dynamic public outreach campaign across the state, collaborating closely with key leaders, elected officials, and working groups to create a master plan that carefully balances the needs of New Mexico’s residents and visitors. The envisioned trail will offer a unique opportunity to experience the state’s natural beauty while learning about its rich culture and history.

Through extensive fieldwork and data collection, Alta identified alternative trail alignments. This, combined with input from stakeholders, informed the selection of the preferred routes.

The final master plan includes a conceptual design of the Rio Grande Trail, highlights key destinations and trailheads, estimates the trail’s potential economic and community benefits, and provides a comprehensive work plan for moving forward with implementation.
