This collaborative effort created a unified, community-driven roadmap to expand and sustain world-class recreation opportunities across Mt. Shasta, Dunsmuir, Weed, and McCloud.
Alta led an inclusive planning process designed to reflect the voices and values of the region. Four interactive visioning workshops, hosted in beloved local gathering places such as bike shops and breweries, engaged more than 170 community members. Through storytelling, facilitated discussions, and exercises exploring recreation “gains and groans,” participants generated over 100 project ideas. Additional input from surveys, focus groups, and interviews ensured broad representation.
Working alongside a Sustainable Recreation Committee of local experts and land managers, Alta helped refine and prioritize projects based on feasibility, climate resilience, economic impact, and community benefit. A flagship vision emerged: a multi-use, town-to-town trail system connecting the four communities, supporting both recreation and low-carbon transportation.
The resulting plan addresses complex challenges including seasonal access, wildfire resilience, connectivity, and equity while equipping local partners with ready-to-implement, grant-ready projects to advance a more connected, resilient future for South Siskiyou County.
