The CV Link—a Mega Trail with Mega Issues

9:45 a.m. – 10:45 a.m, Wednesday, October 4th

When completed, CV Link will provide a 50-mile multi-use path not just for walking and biking but also for low-speed electric vehicles such as golf carts. Stretching across 12 jurisdictions (including three tribes) in the Coachella Valley, it’s been lauded as a long-distance lifeline providing critical access to jobs. It’s also been criticized as a luxurious amenity for golfers that monopolizes funding that could be better invested in the region’s disadvantaged communities and conversely as a conduit for “undesirables.” Hear about the project’s rollercoaster ride toward implementation, and take away lessons for developing your own ambitious regional projects.

Sustainable Youth Education Programs Through Partnerships:
the Story of YES and SRTS Santa Monica

1:45 pm – 2:45 pm, Wednesday, October 4th

This panel brings together two collaborative models of teaching bicycling to children at school, working to sustain momentum beyond grant programs. Youth Educational Sports, Inc. (YES) has delivered bicycle programs to children for over 25 years. YES teaches their own curriculum on school grounds with outside professionals or by training P.E. teachers. Safe Routes to School in Santa Monica works with local advocacy organization Santa Monica Spoke to draw long-lasting support from parents, community members, and City staff. This collaboration continued to provide education following a 2012-2013 pilot program, bridging to an expansion grant in 2016.

Pop-up Demonstrations & DIY Infrastructure Workshop & Panel

9:45 am – 10:45 am, Thursday, October 5th

Pop-up and Do-It-Yourself bikeways allow advocates to fix the street themselves if they are impatient with the official pace of change, especially after a fatal collision. Sometimes, public agencies collaborate with advocates to demonstrate in real life what a plan will look like. This is a workshop for advanced DIY infrastructure. Learn about designs which are kept in place longer than one day, community-driven popup bikeways, and guerrilla actions.Dave Campbell, Bike East Bay;

Better Bikeway Design Symposium Rapid-Fire Opening Session

1:45 pm – 2:30 pm, Thursday, October 5th

The Better Bikeway Design Symposium is an innovative way to learn and teach about the latest in bikeway designs. In this first session, you’ll hear from eight professionals in rapid-fire format. Fast-paced, entertaining, and informative, you’ll learn about the breadth of issues regarding each design idea — but you won’t learn in depth and you won’t get to ask questions. In the following two sessions, each professional will staff a table and present their design again, in a relaxed and informal session where you get to ask questions, debate, and get as technical as you want.

Advisory Bike Lanes: Lessons Learned in North America

4:45 pm – 5:30 pm, Thursday, October 5th

Designed for narrow roads with low traffic volumes and low to moderate speeds, “advisory bike lanes” delineate space on both sides of the roadway for bicyclists, leaving motorists with a two-way travel lane in the middle. This presentation will discuss the design’s success in Europe and review lessons learned from installations in North America.
