Engineering Urban Bikeways

At Alta, we believe that great design transforms communities. That vision came to life in our work on this federally funded project in Saint Paul, where we provided design services to enhance multimodal transportation options. The project includes a two-way separated bikeway, a multi-use trail, and roadway reconstruction—all aimed at improving pedestrian access and upgrading traffic signals and utilities.

Collaboration was key. Our team worked closely with public works, parks and recreation, and other agencies to align on landscaping and maintenance, ensuring a cohesive and sustainable design. Leading the preliminary engineering phase, Alta focused on best practices for bikeway width, buffers, intersection transitions, and sidewalk connections. The result? A safer, more intuitive network that minimizes conflicts between cyclists and pedestrians while seamlessly integrating into the existing transportation system.

Drawing from lessons learned in recent Capital City bikeway projects, we prioritized accessibility and low-stress design—making biking and walking a viable choice for people of all ages and abilities. Our national expertise in multimodal design, coupled with a deep understanding of local policies, allowed us to create a transportation corridor that is not only functional but also future-ready.
