Building Safer Streets Through Community Engagement: The Impact of Tualatin Moving Forward
In 2018, Tualatin voters took a bold step toward a safer, more connected city by approving the $20 million Tualatin Moving Forward (TMF) bond measure. This initiative set out to improve transportation and safety infrastructure across the city, ensuring that all residents—regardless of how they travel—could move safely and efficiently.
Alta partnered with the City of Tualatin to turn this vision into reality, providing engineering, strategic planning, public engagement, and graphic design support to bring TMF projects to life. Acting as an extension of City staff, the Alta team helped shape safer streets while prioritizing the needs of the community.
A key element of this work was inclusive engagement. Recognizing the importance of reaching all residents, Alta’s Spanish-speaking engineers engaged directly with Tualatin’s Hispanic community to discuss project designs, trade-offs, and technical aspects. This direct outreach led to:
- A project location being modified based on community input
- The creation of a community-driven sidewalk art program
- Additional funding for public engagement on future transportation projects
- Stronger trust between the City and its Spanish-speaking community
By ensuring that community voices were at the center of the process, Tualatin Moving Forward not only enhanced infrastructure but also strengthened relationships between the City and its residents. This project is a testament to how collaborative, equity-driven planning can create safer, more vibrant communities.
