Portland Has Something Else to be Thankful For

Central City in Motion is a Go

This Thanksgiving, there’s a lot to be grateful for. Here at Alta, we’re celebrating the Portland City Council’s unanimous vote to adopt Central City in Motion, which will make downtown streets safer, more efficient, and equitable for all Portland residents.

The November 15 decision pledged to build a series of protected bike lanes, bus-only travel lanes, and improved pedestrian crossings in the central city within the next five years.

Leveraging public input on 100+ project ideas, Central City in Motion has developed 18 projects that will reshape Portland streets for the future, making them more efficient, safer, and more flexible.

In collaboration with Jacobs, Alta created a strategic investment plan for Portland’s Central City to accommodate significant growth while reducing drive alone trips. Alta provided leadership in developing the central city active transportation network, designing enhanced walking and bicycling facilities at key locations along priority corridors, and leading the project evaluation and prioritization processes.

“It was an all-star team,” observed Alta Principal Katie Mangle. “I’m proud Alta was a part of this, and proud of the leadership shown by the City of Portland to commit to bold action.”

Alta’s Mike Sellinger took a photo of the City Council hearing, shortly before Central City in Motion was adopted.

Alta also supported the City’s public engagement process by creating a series of three robust online open houses that featured interactive exercises to solicit input from a broad swath of the community.
