Urban Cooling and Heat Islands

Understanding how to design resilient landscapes is critical in places that are projected to get progressively hotter and drier in the future. Identifying opportunities to expand urban tree canopies in ways that reinforce active transportation, like incorporating stormwater receptive buffers into bikeways and sidewalks, can incentivize use of those facilities while keep and planting species that are drought-tolerant, well-suited for projected climate futures, and resistant to pests that can endanger long-term tree health in a warming region.
